پھر وہی رات کے پچھلے پہروں میں معافی مانگتے تھے،¹

   یعنی وہ ان لوگوں میں سے نہ تھے جو اپنی راتیں فوق و فجور اور فواحش میں گزارتے رہے اور پھر بھی کسی استغفار کا خیال تک انہیں نہ آیا۔ اس کے برعکس ان کا حال یہ تھا کہ رات کا اچھا خاصا حصہ عبادت الٰہی میں صرف کر دیتے تھے اور پھر بھی پچھلے پہروں میں اپنے رب کے حضور معافی مانگتے تھے کہ آپ کی بندگی کا جو حق ہم پر تھا، اس کے ادا کرنے میں ہم سے تقصیر ہوئی۔ ھُمْ یَسْتَغْفِرُوْنَ کے الفاظ میں ایک اشارہ اس بات کی طرف بھی نکلتا ہے کہ یہ پرسش انہی کو زیبا تھی۔ وہی اس شان عبودیت کے اہل تھے کہ اپنے رب کی بندگی میں جان بھی لڑائیں اور پھر اس پر پھولنے اور اپنی نیکی پر فخر کرنے کے بجائے گڑ گڑا کر اپنی کوتاہیوں کی معافی بھی مانگیں۔ یہ ان بے شرم گناہ گاروں کا رویہ نہ ہو سکتا تھا جو گناہ بھی کرتے تھے۔اور اوپر سے اکڑتے بھی تھے۔
