اصل میں لفظ سَا مِدُوْنَ استعمال ہوا ہے جس کے دو معنی اہل لغت نے بیان کیے ہیں۔ ابن عباس عکرمہ اور ابو عبیدہ نحوی کا قول ہے کہ یمنی زبان میں سُمُود کے معنی گانے بجانے کے ہیں اور آیت کا اشارہ اس طرف ہے کہ کفار مکہ قرآن کی آواز کو دبانے اور لوگوں کی توجہ دوسری طرف ہٹانے کے لیے زور زور سے گانا شروع کر دیتے تھے ۔ دوسے معنی ابن عباس اور مجاہد نے یہ بیان کیے ہیں کہ السّمود البرْ طَمَۃ وھی رفع الراس تکبرا، کانو ایمرون علی النبی صلی اللہ علیہ و سلم غضابا مبرطمین۔ یعنی سُمود تکبر کے طور پر سر نیوڑھانے کو کہتے ہیں، کفار مکہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ و سلم کے پاس سے جب گزر تے تو غصے کے ساتھ منہ اوپر اٹھائے ہوئے نکل جاتے تھے ۔ راغب اصفہانی نے مفردات میں بھی یہی معنی اختیار کیے ہیں، اور اسی معنی کے لحاظ سے سایدُون کا مفہوم قتادہ نے غافِلون اور سعید بن جبیر نے مہرضون بیان کیا ہے ۔
