اس کے دو معنی ہو سکتے ہیں۔ ایک یہ کہ جو کچھ ہم کر رہے ہیں یہ آج کوئی نئی چیز نہیں ہے ، صدیوں سے ہمارے باپ ددا یہی کچھ کرتے چلے آ رہے ہیں۔ یہی ان کا دین تھا، یہی ن کا تمدن تھا اور ایسے ہی ان کے اخلاق اور معاملات تھے۔ کون سی آفت ان پر ٹوٹ پڑی تھی کہ اب ہم اس کے ٹوٹ پڑنے کا اندیشہ کریں۔ اس طرز زندگی میں کوئی خرابی ہوتی تو پہلے ہی وہ عذاب آ چکا ہوتا جس سے تم ڈراتے ہو۔ دوسرے معنی یہ بھی ہو سکتے ہیں کہ جو باتیں تم کر رہے ہو ایسی ہی باتیں پہلے بھی بہت سے مذہبی خبطی اور اخلاق کی باتیں بگھارنے والے کرتے رہے ہیں ، مگر دنیا کی گاڑی جس طرح چل رہی تھی اسی طرح چلے جا رہی ہے۔ تم جیسے لوگوں کی باتیں نہ ماننے کا یہ نتیجہ کبھی بر آمد نہ ہوا کہ یہ گاڑی کسی صدمہ سے دو چار ہو کر الٹ گئی ہوتی۔

آیت 137 اِنْ ہٰذَآ اِلَّا خُلُقُ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ ”آپ علیہ السلام ہمارے سامنے پرانے زمانے کی باتوں اور فرسودہ روایات کو دہرا رہے ہیں جن کا حقیقت سے کوئی تعلق نہیں ہے۔ یہ باتیں تو بس یوں ہی چلی آئی ہیں۔
