اے محمد ؐ ، ان لوگوں نے اِس کوشش میں کوئی کسر اُٹھا نہیں رکھی کہ تمہیں فتنے میں ڈال کر اُس وحی سے پھیر دیں جو ہم نے تمہاری طرف بھیجی ہے تاکہ تم ہمارے نام پر اپنی طرف سے کوئی بات گھڑو۔1اگر تم ایسا کرتے تو وہ ضرور تمہیں اپنا دوست بنالیتے

یہ اُن حالات کی طر ف اشارہ ہے جو پچھلے دس بارہ سال سے نبی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو مکے میں پیش آرہے تھے ۔ کفارِ مکہ اس بات کے درپے تھے کہ جس طرح بھی ہو آپ کو توحید کی اس دعوت سے ہٹا دیں جسے آپ پیش کر رہے تھے اور کسی نہ کسی طرح آپ کو مجبور کر دیں کہ آپ ان کے شرک اور رسومِ جاہلیت سے کچھ نہ کچھ مصالحت کر لیں۔ اس غرض کے لیے انہوں نے آپ کو فتنے میں ڈالنے کی ہر کوشش کی۔ فریب بھی دیے، لالچ بھی دلائے، دھمکیاں بھی دیں، جھوٹے پر پگنڈے کا طوفان بھی اُٹھایا، ظلم و ستم بھی کیا، معاشی دباؤ بھی ڈالا، معاشرتی مقاطعہ بھی کیا، اور وہ سب کچھ کر ڈالا جو کسی انسان کے عزم کو شکست دینے کے لیے کیا جاسکتا تھا۔
