اصل الفاظ ہیں کَعَصْفٍ مَّاْکُوْلٍ۔ عَصْف کا لفظ سُورۂ رحمان آیت 12 میں آیا ہے: ذُوالْعَصْفِ وَ الرَّیْحَانِ، ”اور غلّہ بھُوسے اور دانے والا“۔ اس سے معلوم ہوا کہ عَصْف کے معنی اُس چھلکے کے ہیں جو غلّے کے دانوں پر ہوتا ہے اور جسے کسان دانے نکال کر پھینک دیتے ہیں ، پھر جانور اُسے کھاتے بھی ہیں، اورکچھ ان کے چَبانے کے دوران میں گِرتا بھی جاتا ہے، اور کچھ ان کے پاؤں تلے روندا بھی جاتا ہے۔

آیت 5{ فَجَعَلَہُمْ کَعَصْفٍ مَّاْکُوْلٍ۔ } ”پھر اس نے کردیا ان کو کھائے ہوئے بھس کی طرح۔“ یعنی اس پورے لشکر کی حالت اس چارے یا ُ بھس کی طرح ہوگئی جسے جانوروں نے کھا کر چھوڑ دیا ہو۔
