Do not precede Ramadan by fasting a day or two unless a man has a habitual fast, then let him fast it
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not precede Ramadan by fasting a day or two unless a man has a habitual fast, then let him fast it."

Explanation from the source
- Affectation is prohibited, and the observance of worship as legislated, without any addition or omission, is obligatory.
- Part of the rationale behind this—and Allah knows best—is to distinguish between the obligatory acts of worship and the voluntary ones, to be prepared for receiving Ramadan with energy and eagerness, and for fasting to be the distinctive mark of that virtuous and special month.
