عبداللہ بن عتبہ نے حضرت عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے ( اس آیت کے متعلق ) روایت کی : " وہ لوگ جنھیں یہ ( کافر ) پکارتے ہیں ، وہ خود اپنے رب کی طرف ( کسی نیک عمل کا ) و سیلہ ڈھونڈتے ہیں ہیں ۔ " انھوں نے کہا : یہ ( آیت ) عربوں کے ایک ایسے گروہ کے بارے میں نازل ہوئی جو جنوں کے ایک گروہ کی عبادت کیا کرتے تھے ۔ جنوں نے اسلام قبول کرلیا جبکہ وہ انسان جو ان کی عبادت کیا کرتے تھے ، انھیں پتہ تک نہ چلا ۔ اس پر یہ آیت اتری : " وہ لوگ جنھیں یہ ( کافر ) پکارتے ہیں ، وہ خود ا پنے رب کی طرف وسیلہ تلاش کر تے ہیں ۔
